Welcome back! In our previous blog, we shared the journey of transforming Equal SRQ’s cottage into a vibrant community hub. Today, we’re excited to bring you an exclusive interview with Paulina Connolly, co-founder and executive director of Equal SRQ. We’ll dive into her vision, the impact of the new space, and her experience working with Angela Chang Design Studio.
Interview with the Cofounder and Executive Director of Equal SRQ - Paulina Connolly
Angela: Hi Paulina! Thanks for joining us today. We want to explain a little bit of the back story of the Equal SRQ project, can you tell me about this project and how it all started?
Paulina: This project began with a vision to create a welcoming and supportive space for our community. Equal SRQ is dedicated to improving the mental and physical well-being of people within our community being affected by substance use disorder and mental health conditions. We needed a space that could serve as a hub for our activities, providing a safe and inspiring environment.
After months of searching, we found a small cottage that had a lot of potential but
required a bit of work. That’s when we decided to partner with Angela Chang Design Studio. I could see your passion for design and commitment to community work made you the perfect fit for this project.
Angela: That's very kind of you! I remember our first meeting and how inspired I was by what you and Tom were doing. What led you to choose a professional interior designer for this project?
Paulina: We all have our own professional specialties, and mine is not necessarily space planning and interior design. The functionality of our space was paramount to our success, so we wanted someone who could create a functional, but also visually appealing environment. Our mission at Equal SRQ is to create a supportive environment for individuals dealing with substance use and mental health challenges.
We felt that a professional design studio could help us achieve a space that truly embodied this mission. Your design studio came highly recommended, and after meeting you in person at the chamber event, we knew you were the right choice to bring our vision to life.
Angela: I am so glad we connected as well. How did the initial design concept align with your vision?
Paulina: During our first meeting, you presented us with three distinct design approaches in that kickoff presentation. The design concept was spot-on with our vision. It showed us that you understood our need for a lively, inviting space that didn’t feel institutional. The vibrant colors and flexible furniture that you suggested perfectly matched our goal of creating an inviting and dynamic environment.
Angela: I love seeing how excited you were about the colors and the furniture. Can you share more about your vision for this newly transformed space?
Paulina: My vision was to have a space that felt like a second home to the community. A place where people could come together, feel supported, and be inspired to make positive changes in their lives. It was important for us that our new space be both functional and uplifting.
Angela: That's such an inspiring vision! How has the newly designed space impacted the Equal SRQ team and visitors?
Paulina: The new space has had a profound impact. Our team feels more energized and motivated. Visitors have commented on how welcoming and vibrant the space feels, especially the ones who had seen the before and after transformation. It’s become a hub for community activities and support for our outreach program.
Angela: Was this your first experience working with a designer? And what was your experience like?
Paulina: I have worked with interior designers before but not on commercial projects. You were attentive to our needs, always open to feedback, and incredibly creative. And your collaborative approach made the entire process smooth and easy for us.
Angela: well, thank you and the feeling is mutual! What unique attributes did you think I brought to the project that stood out to you?
Paulina: From the initial before pictures and measurements to the final furniture selection with provided links, your attention to detail was impeccable. The ability to translate our vision into tangible plans and designs exceeded our expectations. And your ability to blend functionality with aesthetics was key. I can say you have a keen eye for detail and a deep understanding of how to create spaces that serve multiple purposes. Your passion for community work shone through in every aspect of the project.
Angela: Now I'm blushing. What were the main challenges you think we had during this project? And how were they handled?
Paulina: As our requirements and specifications evolved a couple of
times, you seemed to adapt to these changes, remaining available and proactive every step of the way. The level of attentiveness was particularly invaluable when coordinating with third parties, making the entire experience smooth and stress-free. I am sure it was not easy to make most of the updates removable since this is a lease, but you were able to do this and make it look great.
Angela: Flexibility is key in any project and the benefit of being a boutique-size design studio! Can you describe the role of community collaboration in this project?
Paulina: Community collaboration was crucial. From volunteers helping with painting to local nonprofits donating art and accessories, this community’s involvement made the project special.
Angela: Your approach to involving the community added to the project's success. Knowing who to talk to, and what to say to them are very important skills. I learned a lot from you! Now, what are your plans for this new space?
Paulina: We plan to expand our programs by offering more workshops and support groups. We also aim to create an art studio in the detached garage, providing a creative outlet for our community members.
Angela: I love seeing everyone come together for good causes. My final question for today is - what is the five-year plan for Equal SRQ?
Paulina: Over the next five years, we hope to secure a permanent location for Equal SRQ, expand our services, and increase our outreach programs. We aim to continue improving the mental and physical well-being of our community members through dedicated support and innovative programs.
Angela: That sounds amazing! Thank you so much for spending your precious time with us today. And I hope to see more progress as you grow, and I look forward to working with you more.
