As I walked into my client's Sarasota waterfront home, I was immediately drawn to the view. Floor-to-ceiling glass framed Sarasota Bay like a painting.
Then I heard the dog's nails. Sharp clicks across the tile floor.
When my client began speaking, I found myself leaning in to catch every word.
I recognized the pattern immediately.
She had invested in a beautiful waterfront home, but something was off. Her daily life didn't match the promise of the view.
Many homeowners relocating to Sarasota feel the same frustration. The architecture is stunning. The views are extraordinary. But the interior feels cold and uninviting.
The missing layer is acoustic planning. As sound competes with comfort, the view is no longer enough.

As a Sarasota interior designer, I often see this pattern in waterfront homes. Architecture prioritizes views, light, and openness, with little thought to how the home sounds once people begin living in it.
Acoustic comfort is easier to address during the design phase of new builds or major renovations, before materials and furnishings are selected. But even in an existing home, there are ways to reduce echo and create a calmer environment. With the right approach, a home can feel open and modern while remaining comfortable to live in.
Acoustic Comfort Happens in Layers
The foundation is understanding how a home's proportions, circulation, and architectural details influence everyday living, including how sound moves from one area to another. No single product eliminates echo. Acoustic comfort is achieved by multiple layers working together throughout the home.
Ceilings as the fifth wall
Tray ceilings and cove lighting with a curved detail enhance the architecture without looking fussy, breaking up echoes. A textured inset can add quiet interest or blend in while softening the acoustics of the room.

Hard surfaces, such as tile and polished concrete, perform well in Florida’s climate but can increase echo.
Upholstered wall panels, such as leather-wrapped panels, are also visually compelling design elements that soften a room’s acoustics while adding warmth.
For ceilings or upper walls, a paintable acoustic felt can be custom-painted to match your wall color, so it blends in completely rather than reading as a separate material.
In spaces that call for a cleaner, more architectural look, acoustic drywall is another option — it installs like standard drywall but is engineered to absorb noticeably more sound, at a modest cost premium.

Area rugs, upholstered seating, linen lampshades, and textile artwork soften sound while adding warmth and personality. Together, these layers create a home that feels refined, visually rich, and inviting.
